Twelve: July 24, 2013 Milano

Well, the end of the beginning!

Good news! I'm staying with Sorella Hoppe here in Milano!  I'm really excited.  We have been planning a really great finding activity...Ok ok, so we stole it from the District (the PMG missionary DVD!) It was such a good idea.  We're having a beach party/ church tour!  It's going to be awesome.  We're doing it in August.

We started working as a ward and doing member splits to go visit the less-active families.  It's awesome.  Every Sunday, we go out and visit less-actives to see if they live there, are still interested in the church, and we help them as best as we can.

we have 3 new investigators!  I might have already told you about one.  She's amazing.  The other two are from a family of less-actives...so it's a part-member family.  They are great.

We have had a lot of meals this week. Pretty much all of our ward is from Peru, it's awesome.  We've had the best food!!  lomos saltado, arroz con pollo, ....other good stuff that has a name but I don't know it...it's just all good!

------

We got a new shower curtain!  Woo hoo!  It's clean and fresh and doesn't stick to me.  Yay life!

The new missionaries arrived today!
5 sorelle
24 anziani!

Yeah that's all for that section...that I can think of.

Oh...my first transfer is almost up! That's pretty exciting.

-----

So....my top retainer piece cracked.  it's missing a chunk at the front by the back of my teeth...don't really know what to do about that.

Also!!! I found out...you don't have to pay customs when you use amazon.co.uk because it's already in Europe-so, if I need anything that I can't find here, maybe it would just be easier to send it from there.

---------

It's so humid here...it's gotten a lot warmer too.  So some days its really uncomfortable, but it's ok because when we have lessons, normally there is air conditioning and some metros have AC too.

My feet are still swollen though.  Not as bad or painful, but I'm trying a few different things.  I'll figure it out.

----

I'm struggling a lot with my weaknesses.  Some days I feel like an awful person.  I don't feel sacred or sanctified.  I really have to re-adjust my mind and focus on Jesus Christ.  I feel like I was better at that before.

Please don't get me wrong.  We're working.  We're teaching and we feel the Spirit.  I am happy.  It's just difficult.  I feel disconnected some of the time.  I'm working on it.  I really need to just give it all to the Lord.  I'm figuring it out, I just feel like it's taking too long.

Mommy, I wouldn't trade this for the world.  I wouldn't rather be anywhere else.  I am here because I am supposed to be.  I know that.  I'm working on how I can be better and improve.  I am so happy here.  I love this life.  I love these people.  The food is an extra bonus!  I love this Gospel.  I just need to reconnect/connect a few disconnected pieces.  I need a mighty change of heart.  I love this..I love knowing what I need to change, because if I didn't then I would ALWAYS be the same...ugh how boring!  This is right for me.

Also, you don't need to pay customs for post or letters, just packages.  So if you did want to send anything, it would be $2 in postage, and it gets here fairly quickly, or so I've heard.

I'm so happy with all that is going on and all that you are accomplishing.  Please keep going!  Never give up!  I know that you are being guided to the things that you need.  Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

I love you so much Mommy

We'll talk soon

Sorella Carlock

PS - I'm sorry about the weird undertone of this email, I'm really doing great I promise!  I just want to change for the better!

Eleven: July 17, 2013 Milano

Cara Famiglia...(that's not actually correct grammar but oh well)

Come state? Tutto bene?

I am so glad to hear from you and to know how everything is going.  I love getting your emails and I am excited to share mine.  I'll send pictures in another email...I have a lot!

OKAI!  For starters....right now, my legs hurt so much! Ha ha my legs and feet have been swollen for the past few days and it's not exactly comfortable, BUT I'm not dying or anything.  All is well...OK...

Now that my complaining is over, we can get to the good stuff.

We have 3 new investigators!!!  We have FHEs and lessons with meno-attivo families a lot.  We visited a family and they had a friend over!!! WOW she is amazing...golden, golden, golden!  She told us about how she didn't feel right in any church, and how she went to a lot to find the truth...  We talked about the Book of Mormon with her and we told her we wanted to meet with her and WE HAD A GREAT TIME!  She came to the church, and a member showed up too, and the Spirit was so strong.  It was really special.  We were able to help her understand more about our church by giving her a tour (we have a pretty big building..I'd say) and by sitting in the chapel to close the lesson.  I think we all felt the Spirit very strongly.  I'm really excited to meet with her..

2 others are from less-actives families..well part-member families I guess.  We have been visiting people and I feel so much better about it now...We didn't have a lot of investigators because we did a lot of 'reactivation' work and I felt that we were missing a huge part of what we needed to be doing as missionaries...but WAIT...our purpose is to INVITE OTHERS TO COME UNTO CHRIST...there is so specific title or person mentioned...that means all others.  I feel so silly for forgetting that.  I love this work...everyone needs to feel that the Saviour knows and loves him/her...everyone.

------

We met President Dibb!!!! He came to our ward on Sunday with his wife!!! And we had Zone Training and interviews this week.  Mommy, he is amazing!!! He is so kind, loving, funny, and TALL!!

He said something really silly ''Be kind to your companion, she/he might date your husband/wife''.  His trainer dated Sorella Dibb before she became a Dibb.

ALSO .------guess!!! just guess!!! President Dibb's first city was MILANO!!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness, when he told us that, I got so excited!  He was here first, just like me!

Sorella Dibb is sweet and so lovely.  I love her!

Also, President and Sorella Dibb told us that they want to teach our lessons with us........WHAT!!!!  Our mission president, his wife...with us...in our lessons!!! WOW!!!

SOO COOL!

MY Mission President is here...and I love him.

------
Speaking of cool...not.... ;)
It's getting really warm and humid here, so we've been trying to find nice airy clothing so that we don't overheat and die. Ha ha...Italians wear a lot of see-through clothes...yeah, we can't wear anything like that, but we've found some things and we just try to walk in the shade and sit down when we can.  We're totally all good though. We're alive and well and we are staying as cool as we can.

I think I'm completely over the jetlag and hour change...6 hour is literally...like it's a huge difference, but I'm definitely over it now.  We also have to sleep with fans on at night because our little house gets so stuffy if we don't.  We live in a 'duplex'...it's a house but it's for two families.  Our landlord family is so nice.

EVA!!! I was doing areabook the other day...I found a name...just guess what the name was....just guess....

GIORGI !!!!!!  Georgie is in Italy!!!
[Editor's note: Georgie is Eva's dog - named after George Harrison of the Beatles.}
-----

TANNER! How is your program? is it over yet?  have you gotten to ride around with the firemen yet?  How was it?  How are you?

_____

Mommy...my dear, dear Mommy!  I am so glad you're getting everything all worked out.  It is so amazing!

And Liam, our little Liam is now able to be on the ward records.  WOW!  What is going on?  All this cool stuff is happening.  That is so special...He is there, with us, recognized as a member of our family. I won't be able to read it until next week, but how did he get a baby blessing?? Can you tell me about that?

-----
We found a Leonardo DaVinci doll, just like at Watchung Booksellers!

I LOVE that you send me emails with a weekly section of weird kids names, it's the best!!!  Thank you...

WELL....this is all I've got.  I'll write things down to put in my email for next week, and then I'll send those to you.

I love you and....AND ALL THAT READ THIS...so much.  You are the fuel to my motivational fire.  I do this so that all my dear ones may be blessed, including the souls that I have met out here...and my own.  You are a power of strength for me and I thank you.

Never give up-
Never surrender.

We have the knowledge of truth, that is enough to continue forward.  Let nothing stand in the way of a relationship between you and our Divine Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I LOVE YOU
I MISS YOU
I pray that you will be well, whole, happy, and blessed.

Please know, Mommy, that you are not without me and I am not without you, we are still together.  We are still connected.  Time and space makes no difference.  You are here with me, and I with you.

I love you, Mommy...when you're old...ha ha in 50 years, it'll be my turn to tell you, I love you my mommy...like you did for me, just like the children's book...and I will want to because you have never left me alone...so I'll never put you in a nursing home! :) he he

I love you with my whole being...from the former life to the next.

Siete i miei cari! Don't forget your worth...He never will.

Love you!

Sorella Carlock

We kinda love red doors...

Ten: July 10, 2013 Milano

Hi!!!

I don't have much time - only 15 minutes.

Since last week nothing noteworthy has really happened.  I bore my testimony on Sunday.  We had an FHE with an active family and less-active family.  It was really special.

We saw Marco [our investigator] and he hadn't read, but we taught the plan of salvation and he seemed really happy about it.  we gave him something else to read and if he doesnt read that, then i think we'll just have to tell him that we can't continue to teach him if he doesn't read and pray.

We will have dinner with the two women we teach this week.  I'm excited; I really love them.

We are teaching the GANS FHE lesson this week  (GANS is YSA).  We have a really fun activity planned and Sorella Hoppe and I are excited for it.

We have had a ton of days where we worked on our Area Book.  The old one was such a mess and there were teaching records in there from 2004 that hadn't been checked.  So poor Sorella Hoppe has had to call about 200-400 people this past week.  I want to help but I can't understand on the phone because I can't see their mouths, and I can't respond anyway.  I feel so bad.  She calls, I just write out the names of the numbers that work and organize the pages in a fresh, new, clean, pretty area book!

I got some new clothes today with my birthday money.  A sweater for inside the house, a shirt, and a skirt.  Happy Birthday to me! lol-

There are these things here called Kebabs, and they are pretty much turkish gyros.  they are pretty good.

WE FOUND A REALLY GREAT GELATO PLACE!
When you come here, we'll go there.  I got crema gelato and it was so fresh and so delicious. I also got stracchiatella (I probably didn't spell that right) it's one of my favorites - it was perfect!  They gave us a sample of nutella and chocolate and MOMMY; YOU'D DIE!  It was really good.  Sorella Hoppe got canella which is cinnamon, and it was A MAZ ING!

Overall, life is good in Milano. Productive, full, happy, tiring, hot, humid, sweaty, but clean. We have ants in our house...well we did,....UNTIL WE KILLED THEM ALL!  Life is good.  All good, spic and span.  Feels good, feels really good.

Seriously life is great, Im healthy, my hair is big (because of the humidity) so I might cut it soon, and I laugh a lot!

Don't worry about me, don't miss me.  Just love me and keep telling me about you!

Enjoy life...we are here on the earth to have joy...have it!

I love you.  I'm sending many many kisses and hugs.

You are my sunshines, my only sunshines!

Vi amo tantissimo, and my eternity bracelet reminds me of that every day!

We are together forever.  Not even death can break our bond...it just stretches our boundaries a little. WE WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER!!!!!!

I received this lovely note yesterday.  Women, especially other mothers, just know.

Alisa,

I wanted you to know that I met your daughter here in Milan, Italy.  Our family is here for two weeks and we have been attending the Milano ward for the past two weeks where we first met your daughter.  We are from Alpine, Utah.

Your darling daughter bore a sweet testimony in Italian during testimony meeting this last Sunday.  She radiates light and has a darling personality.  Her companion is from Germany, speaks perfect English, and seems like a wonderful sister.   It was so fun to visit with her, and I thought you would want to know how well she is doing.  I have a daughter presently serving in the Malaga, Spain mission who went out this past March.  Missions can be tough for those first few months until they get a grasp of the language.  Your daughter seemed to be doing really well with Italian.

I have no doubt that she will be a powerful instrument in Italy to bring many precious souls unto Christ.

-Dana

Happy 21st Birthday Sorella Carlock!

We went to the YSA (GANS in italian) activity...We showed up and waited a little bit, then went to buy some treats.  We came back to the church right in time, and I walked into the door and BOOM....everyone yells SORPRESA! and then BOOM streamers and confetti....

Mommy, they threw me a BIRTHDAY PARTY! How sweet is that??? I HAD NO IDEA!

A GANZ made me a masa flour and nutella cake! It was deliziosa...seriously.

Also, we met with our first two investigators today...the women to which we teach the gospel in English. They are lovely women.  We are working on a Plan of Salvation packet for them.

My birthday is tomorrow and not only did I not think I was going to celebrate but I didn't know anyone else had planned anything...my first surprise party!!! and as a missionary, too!
How cool?!?!

Editorial Comment from Mommy (Alisa)

Hello, wonderful family and friends who are viewing Zoe's mission blog ~

Only today (July 4, 2013) did I learn how to upload pictures to the blog.  I know, I know, I'm antiquated; but, now I know, and I am a pro!

I've arranged an array of photos that Eva shot from the day Zoe and Tanner left New Jersey, a second array from the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah,  a third from her first assigned area: Milano, and a short one from her 21st birthday, which is Saturday, July 6, 2013.

From now on, I'll post the pictures each week as she sends them.  Thanks for bearing with my learning curve.

One last note - Zoe doesn't have much time to write, and she does so at an internet cafe which sometimes has an unfamiliar keyboard.  I am trying to edit the messages, but they sometimes appear disjointed, or the spelling, punctuation, or subject-verb agreement is often wrong.  Also, she speaks Italian all day, and she sometimes has trouble switching back to English.  Not everything is written perfectly.  We know.  But, all of that is unimportant in a forum such as this.  We post this blog so you all may share in her journey.

Happy Reading!  We send our love.

A.

Last Day in Jersey - April 30, 2013

I realize this is out of order, but I have not yet determined how to amend the date of posting for continuity of content.  Oh, well.  I'm learning as I go.

Ciao la mia famiglia -

We don't get to travel very much around Milano. When we do though, we see sweet things like OLD MEN PLAYING BOCCI BALL!!!! :)  Just like Brooklyn.

We also saw the US Embassy the other day. It was cool! We were on the way to get my Permesso di Soggiorno, which means I can legally live in the country, and we saw all these typically, quintessential Italian places.  Its really like the pictures.  Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful even in the city.  Some places remind me of Brooklyn, its cool.

In case you were wondering, it isn't anything like America.  There are similar things, like the metro, but most of it is so different.  We had to SEARCH for those post it notes for our map.

220 volts is A LOT! I was plugging something in the other day and I shocked myself...its strong. Ha ha...in case you were wondering..but its quick too. I charged my camera battery in an hour! WOHOO!

I'm sorry i haven't sent any written letters. stamps here are 2 euro. and we cant find any.

The rain here is nice!  Its rained once and it smelled amazing.

I'm translating my patriarchal blessing into Italian for language study! Its so much fun and its helping me understand it more simply! Yay!

So weird thing....many nights Ill get CHARLIE HORSES....like most nights. I started drinking water right before bed and it helps , but its so intense.

We run home every night if we are late and it makes us feel better, like we are doing all that we can.  I like that.

I'm almost finished reading The Book of Mormon, for only my 2nd time! I have 82 verses left. I am on Moroni 8!

WE HAVE A NEW INVESTIGATOR...we saw him yesterday and gave him a Book of Mormon...hes really excited.  He wanted to have it. When we got there the first question he asked was 'did you bring the Book?'

He's a war refugee, and he's amazing.  He believes in prophets already and he agrees with what we've taught so far.  We even tried to set a baptismal date...he almost said yes.  He said 'maybe I need to read the book first, then I will say yes'!!!!! HOW COOL IS THAT???

Our goal for a baptismal date is July 27! We think he can do it, That's how much faith he has and how much we have in him.  He's amazing.  His family isn't here in Italy, but he has spoken to them about us and they should be coming soon.

________

So Ive figured out why I'm in Milano and with Sorella Hoppe.

Our purpose here is to reactivate less-actives....we have 600...yes 600 less-actives.  We have made an awesome ward mission plan and presented it to the vescovo (bishop).  We'll be working with the members in their respective areas to visit gli menoattivi.

We are going to light this town up with the light of Christ! IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT!

BTW...I don't know if you've seen in any of my pics, my ZOE cup. I drink from it every second!

AND did you see my watch tan!???

ha ha, i have a foot tan too!...and a forehead tan lol.

ok, so like I said yesterday...God speaks to me through music too.

C'è una cansone ( there is a song)
it is called: HE KNOWS ME BETTER

it says, 'his love is the compass that guides us home'

cool, huh?

____

So we had our little 4th of July lunch and we had our touristy event yesterday. That's pretty much it for my birthday celebration. BUT! ill wake up on Saturday and be 21! woohoo"

We are going to have a baptism on Saturday AND we had one last Saturday! YAY!!!

I had a scambio last week and we had 4 lessons!!! WHAT! ...We normally only have like 2 because of all the secretarial missionary work that we do. I really liked it. AND we taught an English class. It was awesome.

That's pretty much it.

I need to stop eating Nutella....I'm...dare I say it, addicted.

I love our apartment, our ward, Milano,...but I don't like that I haven't found a water bottle yet! ha ha.  I just drink a ton before we leave the house.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

We'll talk next week!

Eva youre the best example of faithful young woman. You are like that girl in the painting reading the scriptures and looking into the light behind her, except she has black hair.

Tanner you're a rock solid example of a GOOD MAN! you go Tanney. you carry so much responsibility but you are still kind, patient and loving. Keep going. You are leading us all on the paths of truth and righteousness.  I LOVE YOU!

I love you all. and Georgie. Individually, completely, and eternally.

WE ARE A COVENANT FAMILY.  We will last forever together.

Nothing better.

I love you more every day.

Sorella Hoppe couldn't find her name tag so she wore my to do speso (shopping)

 Ciao tutti,

First i have to say before i forget - THERE ARE SO MANY LIZARDS HERE! Like little garden salamanders or whatever. its funky!

Guess what? tomorrow I'm doing a scambio (missionary comp switch) with the sorelle in Milano 1. Not going far but it will be cool!

Milan is really a lot like Uruguay. So many South Americans. Sorella Hoppe speaks Spanish and i forgot to tell you this before: Sorella Hoppes name is Eva!!! Eva Maria! how cool is that? You're with me Eva! Sorry there are no apostrophes on this keyboard, i hate it. [Mommy is editing for her baby!]

I'm trying to be quick so please forgive me for the lack of organization.
_____

The fruit and vegetables here are so much better than the US! I love the cookies too, a little too much.  I eat Nutella too! I didn't think I would, but I do!

We haven't had any meals with members or anyone yet. We have arroz con leche, but that's it.  We make our own food and its always good! Yay!

I think I'm losing weight though.

___

I want to share some scriptures

1Ne 21: 3 , 5 (yet i shall be glorified in the eyes with the lord and i shall not be ashamed)

love it!

also ether 1 :38 (if it so be, let us be faithful)

the Lord chooses the best things for us. if something must happen and it is hard...if it so be, let us be faithful. let us never give up

no arrendersi!

We had a missionary training meeting and I saw all of my MTC group.
We watched a movie about how the Atonement applies to Missionary Work...WOW!!!!!

powerful.

as we were going to leave, I hugged Sorella Wolfgramm because shes leaving in a few days and the new president will come...

She said you are amazing, and I know you're amazing because you're here!

I just burst into tears!

(hey i found the apostrophe!)

____

We've been doing a lot of work with menoattivi.  Weve had some really awesome lessons.  We visited an old lady last week who doesn't come to church because she cant hear and it makes her anxious because she wants to hear but she can't....how said is that?

We were meeting with a family of an active man and a less-active woman, she told us not to call anymore...if made me sooo sad.

We had a really great lesson on Monday with a woman, she has such strong faith but do to a situation and her current lifestyle, she doesn't come to church.  I think we can help her! at least i want to try.  Sorella Hoppe, this woman, and I all think is wasn't an accident that we met.

we have done some finding and that's great! we go to the parks and just say hey what makes you happy? whats important to you?

Well its Sorella Hoppe that starts and then I bear testimony or something.

___

The people here are a little crazy! Because I am blonde, I REALLY stand out! Ive been yelled at a few times and men say ciao bella...its weird and uncomfortable but ...whatever.

People on the metro stare at us. We're trying to figure out a way to address everyone on the metro so we don't waste any time.  We spend so much time on the metro and if we don't talk to anyone, we aren't fulfilling our purpose.  So we're working 'soapbox' methods! ha!  picture that! Lopo on a soapbox! nooo...we just want to talk to everyone and not single people out because our purpose is to invite all to come unto Christ!

___

We have a really small shower. its a little bigger than our slop sink at home.  Our toilet is super deep too, and to flush, you turn the water on like a faucet and turn it off when it is empty.

we have a bidet but i don't want to use it! ha ha!

Overall, I am comfortable, happy, and I sleep at night.

------

My personal study time really is the best time of day, Tanney! I am getting so much out of it.

I feel an urgency to do this work, to be on time, to give it my all.

Sorella Hoppe is awesome.

My clothes, suitcases, bedding, shoes, glasses, toiletries, etc. EVERYTHING is PERFECT! do not worry.

I am taken care of.  I have no need to complain. I am so much more than lucky to have all of the things that I have! Non vi preoccupate!  ...I think that's the right phrasing.  Just don't worry.

____

I really love hearing from you. its lifts my spirit. thank you. I'm sorry I can't address every single thing, but I read it with appreciation and I laugh, ''cry'', shout with excitement, and feel your love- please know that!

Thank you for your love and support. you are the best family ever!

___

The only wordly things I miss are peanut butter and my church music. I only have an Italian hymnbook and I don't remember the English words. ha ha. Maybe it's better that way.

I also don't like the fact that we pray in TU form here. I always address Heavenly Father with THY, not you. why do it in Italian? so I struggle with that. But I'm all good. I love everyone, I smile at everyone. I don't get angry. I get sad sometimes and a little lonely, but not more than I am happy.

I love you all. You are my strength. You and My God, my Glorious Father in Heaven, His Son Jesus Christ, and my Companion and Friend, the Holy Ghost. He is always helping me.

You are my sunshines! My only Sunshines!

DONT you dare EVER give up.

Whenever you feel like I'm so far away, remember my love remains!

I love you
I love you!

Vi AMO!!!!!!!

This church is true!

Qualify yourselves!

I LOVE YOU!!!!
